The Cold War was defined by periods of extreme stress and fear, and also stability. then the two superpowers the USA and USSR held a covert, and proxy war between each other. The reason for this was because of the development of nuclear Weapons by both sides, a direct attack on one state by a nonher was essentially suicide as both states would be reciprocally destroyed by each other. Therefore this war remained Cold in the grit that there was no actual fighting between them. (Dockrill 1988) Because of the bunk however, somewhat of a stability emerged between the two states as neither wanted to provoke the other and be mutually destroyed. Therefore the Cold War became a conflict of ideologies and cordial systems, the USA adopted Capitalism as its ideological stance, and promoted commonwealth and private enterprise. Contrastingly the USSR adopted Communism as its ideological stance, and promoted socialism and state ownership of everything, indeed both systems representing the arctic opposite of the other.
